In 2020 I lost about 14kgs/30lbs, going back to my 14-years-old self weight (I'm 37).

Not that I was overly overweight, out of shape or had particular bad habits (I worked out regularly for my entire life, I eat rather well), but that extra weight was there and being forced to stay at home kicked a sense of urgency.

Noom helped me a lot during the first four months but in a really unexpected way: I always thought that if I could transfer a bit of my "workout discipline" into my eating habits I would never had to worry about my weight ever again.

To my surprise I discovered that it wasn't a discipline problem: I found out (through an app!) that I'm an extremely mood-driven eater, and most of my overeating comes from a lack of focus when I eat.

Too many meals in front of the laptop, and too many storm-eating and fog-eating sessions over time caused that slight overweight that has been impossibile to get rid off effectively for about 15 years (I gained and lost 20 pounds over and over again over the years).

I started out by tracking everything, calories intake and calories burned: but then I felt I was over the valley of pain. I quit tracking calories intake and after a few months I also quit. The difference between the "tracking everything" me and the "tracking nothing" me is a mere 6 pounds.

I think I'm a good example of a rare, overly disciplined person that found out that discipline alone can't save you, motivation is good, up to a point, but without adding in a great deal of self-awareness the equation doesn't work.
